The Giant Buddha of Leshan

Day 8

A boat ride to Leshan's ancient Giant Buddha

Near the city of Leshan in China's Sichuan Province, at the confluence of the Min and Dadu rivers, sits a massive stone sculpture of a Maitreya Buddha, carved out of a cliff face. As you approach it by boat for your visit, you may find it almost too big to be believed. The world's largest stone Buddha statue, its construction was suggested by an 8th-century Buddhist monk in the hope that the shrine would calm the dangerous waters that threatened ships on the river. Completed within the next century, the statue's carving caused so much stone to be dropped into the river that its treacherous currents actually were alleviated, and it became safer to navigate!

The Great Wall of China

Day 2

A walk along the Great Wall

One of the only man-made structures that can be seen from space, China's magnificent Great Wall is indeed one of the world's wonders; its sheer size and length make its construction a remarkable human feat. Conceived as a protective barrier, the Great Wall influenced China's history and geography for centuries. On your visit, you'll walk along part of the wall's Badaling section, visit its massive watchtowers, and enjoy lunch at the adjacent Commune... and the spectacular views seemingly stretching on forever...

The Terra Cotta Warriors

Day 5

A 2,000-year-old army of statues

While digging a well near Xi'an in 1974, a Chinese farmer stumbled upon what turned out to be the 3rd-Century BC burial site of Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi... where archaeologists soon discovered an army of more than 8,000 life-sized terracotta statues of warriors – each with distinctive physical features – that have been guarding their Emperor for over 2,000 years! And with Tauck, you'll get an insider's view of the Terra Cotta Warriors from a museum staffer.

The St. Regis Chengdu

Nights 6, 7 and 8

An indulgent experience in Chengdu

Situated just steps from Tianfu Square and Chunxi Road, Chengdu’s newest iconic hotel unites impeccable service with the singular ambience of a private residence. An alluring haven in the heart of Chengdu’s business district, The St. Regis Chengdu artfully combines historic Art Deco accents with cutting edge in-room technology and captivating decor that reflects the local culture.
