Activity

?

Most days require — or offer the option to engage in — longer or more strenuous walking (often 4+ miles or 8,000+ steps), extended standing, or varied terrain such as hills, sand, or cobblestones. Guests should be comfortable crouching to climb into and out of more rugged vehicles or small planes frequently. Some days may also include active excursions like biking, kayaking, horseback riding, or water sports. While less demanding alternatives may be available, the core experience typically involves sustained physical effort and is best suited to guests comfortable with a consistently active pace.

The Majesty of the Taj Mahal

Meet Mt. Everest guide Maya Sherpa

In Kathmandu, Maya Sherpa speaks about climbing Everest

The first Nepalese woman to have climbed Mount Everest three times, Maya Sherpa has always been an adventurer at heart. After studying business and working as a licensed trekking guide, she led her first expedition to Everest in 2006. Since then she has reached the summit of some of the world's most difficult mountains, and is an inspiration to women the world over. "Despite the challenges and hindrances along the way," she says, "nothing is more awesome than knowing I have stepped on the top of the world."

A jungle safari in Bandhavgarh

In search of wildlife in India's Bandhavgarh National Park

Within the forested landscapes of central India's Bandhavgarh National Park, big cats hunt, herds of deer graze and packs of wild dogs mark their territory. Rare Bengal tigers share protected reserves with jungle cats and leopards, hunting antelopes, gazelle, deer and wild boar as hyenas wait for leftovers. A game drive here begins at daybreak in an open-topped jeep, with expert trackers, into the heart of the Bandhavgarh Forest. Keep your camera handy to "capture" any wildlife you encounter. Because they are masters of camouflage, it is rare to spot the elusive tigers in the jungle foliage... but if you do, you'll never forget it!

The Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra

A stone's throw from the Taj Mahal

The readers of Condé Nast Traveler named The Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra to the prestigious Gold List, and the readers of Travel + Leisure rank it as one of the world's best hotels. Situated just 600 meters from the iconic Taj Mahal, each of its guest rooms affords uninterrupted views of this ancient monument to love, while elements of the layout and design pay homage to its Mughal splendor; it is surrounded by terraced lawns, fountains, reflecting pools and pavilions with rich interiors that are reminiscent of the days of princes and emperors.
