After-hours visit to the Museum of Anthropology

Experience Mexico's largest and most renowned museum

Mexico's largest and most celebrated museum, the Museum of Anthropology, offers an extraordinary journey into the heart of Aztec history. Here, you'll enjoy uninterrupted views of treasures like the iconic Aztec Sun Stone, Montezuma's ceremonial headdress, and other priceless artifacts that illuminate Mexico's ancient past.

Xochimilco's Living Legacy

A UNESCO-listed farming tradition flourishing in Mexico City's canals

In the southern reaches of Mexico City, amid the canals and lakes of Xochimilco, a living agricultural tradition endures – one that dates to the Aztecs. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the chinampas – ingenious man-made islands – are considered one of the most productive and sustainable farming systems in the world. For centuries, these fertile plots have supplied the capital with fresh produce, preserving biodiversity and ancestral farming practices that remain vital to the region's ecological balance and cultural identity. Experience this legacy firsthand, arriving by boat to explore the vibrant fields before a farm-fresh lunch inspired by the day's harvest. Seasonal vegetables, herbs, and flowers grown just steps away shape a menu that reflects both tradition and the rhythms of the land for a genuine taste of past and present.

Cooking Demonstration at Alejandro Ruiz Olmedo's Cooking School

Discover the flavors of Oaxacan cooking at its finest

One of the most varied cuisines in Mexico, Oaxacan food is characterized by its local ingredients and various cooking methods. Much like the rest of Mexican cuisine, Oaxacan food consists of traditional staples such as corn, beans and chile peppers in addition to other well-known ingredients including chocolate, mescal, Oaxaca cheese and "chapulines" (grasshoppers). On a visit to famed Oaxacan-chef Alejandro Ruiz Olmedo's cooking school, you'll be introduced to this regional style of cooking during a live cooking demonstration followed by a family-style dinner that offers you a delectable sampling of authentic Oaxaca gastronomy.

Teotihuacan: The City of the Gods

Walk among the ancient pyramids of this UNESCO World Heritage Site

Discover Teotihuacan, the "Place where the Gods were created," a UNESCO World Heritage Site steeped in mystery. A visit here offers introduces you to its famed sites including; the Pyramid of the Sun, Pyramid of the Moon, and Avenue of the Dead, highlighted by a stop at the Palace of the Jaguars. Known locally as Quetzpapalotl, this ancient dwelling is believed to have once been the home of a high-ranking dignitary or priest!

Enjoy a private visit to Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul

Step inside the home of prolific painter and global icon – Frida Kahlo

A private, pre-opening visit to Casa Azul, the home of artist and global icon Frida Kahlo provides you with unimpeded views of her possessions, works of art, and eclectic collection of clothes, complimented by commentary surrounding her life, friendships and stormy relationship with husband and fellow artist – Diego Rivera.

Monte Albán: The Lost City of the Zapotecs

Explore one of Mexico's most storied archaeological sites

A choice of activities offers you a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Monte - one of the most famous archeological sites in Mexico (as well as one of its hidden gems, literally!). Untouched by European explorers until its discovery by a local farmer in the 1930s, Monte Albán's origins date back over 2,500 years ago as a socio-political and economic epicenter of the ancient Zapotec civilization. Known for its unique carvings or danzantes, many of the sites you'll see during your visit here such as its pyramids, terraces, canals and ball courts were all carved out of the nearby mountain and remain today as a well-preserved example of Mesoamerican history.

The dreamy and fantastical folk art of Alebrije

Craft your own vibrant alebrije at a local workshop

Translated to "fantasy" or "imaginary," alebrija are wooden figures designed to look like animals or mythical creatures traditionally painted in colorful designs and styles. According to legend, Mexican artist Pedro Linares fell ill one day and during a fever dream he hallucinated a forest consisting of rocks, trees and clouds that transformed before his very eyes into various chimeras. Today, alebrije carving/sculpting has become an important part of Oaxaca's economy and you'll have an exciting opportunity to create your own alebrije while at a local studio.

Health, Safety and Mobility

You should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over uneven terrain that may, at times, be rocky and muddy, as some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Therefore, roads and walkways may present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion. Pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in in order to appreciate fully the sometimes challenging terrain.

We regret that we cannot accommodate wheelchairs on this tour. Guests should bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues. We also cannot provide you with individual assistance for walking, dining or other personal needs. If you need such assistance, you must be accompanied by an able companion who will assist you.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras or Belize. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here.

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries on the itinerary to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

Packing Recommendations

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site.

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

Valet laundry and dry-cleaning services are available for a fee at the hotels.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Hairdryers are available at the hotels.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (VERY IMPORTANT)
  • Hiking boots for those who choose to hike
  • Rainwear, such as a raincoat and rain hat, plus a collapsible umbrella
  • Long pants, fleece jacket or warm sweater; light sweater for warmer days

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident.
