Most days require — or offer the option to engage in — longer or more strenuous walking (often 4+ miles or 8,000+ steps), extended standing, or varied terrain such as hills, sand, or cobblestones. Guests should be comfortable crouching to climb into and out of more rugged vehicles or small planes frequently. Some days may also include active excursions like biking, kayaking, horseback riding, or water sports. While less demanding alternatives may be available, the core experience typically involves sustained physical effort and is best suited to guests comfortable with a consistently active pace.

Experiences of a lifetime

From the Big Five to silverback Mountain Gorillas, wildlife is the draw on this 16-day safari in Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda, where game drives and a special mountain trek reward with once-in-a-lifetime encounters with animals, both endemic and endangered... highlighted by an opportunity to "meet" a gorilla family living in the wilds of Rwanda and a visit to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Museum, dedicated to saving the endangered mountain gorilla.

Gorillas in your midst... Spend the last three nights of your 16-day African safari to Kenya and Tanzania in Rwanda, home to some of the last remaining mountain gorillas on Earth. Learn insights and observations about gorilla behavior at private lectures and during a visit to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Museum before your once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trek begins. A private porter will carry your provisions as an expert guide leads you into the wilderness for your gorilla encounter. Once the gorillas are located, you will have the rare opportunity to watch them interact with each other – and you if they choose! Your adventure includes talks by conservationists working to save these endangered gorillas from extinction. All departures are small groups, limited to 24 guests. In Tanzania, you can find a birdwatcher's paradise in Lake Manyara and Africa's "Garden of Eden" in Ngorongoro Crater. The circle of life continues in the savannas of Kenya, where indescribable vignettes play out before your eyes in Maasai Mara National Reserve and Samburu National Reserve... Return to a time when the Great Rift Valley held the secrets of the origins of mankind... Observe huge herds roaming the Serengeti, the "lost world" of Ngorongoro Crater soar in a hot air balloon over the Maasai Mara at dawn – capped by a champagne breakfast in the bush... view rescued chimpanzees and protected black rhinos at Ol Pejeta Conservancy... attend a special barbecue dinner accompanied by Maasai cultural performance in the Serengeti... enjoy a two-night stay at fabled Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club... meet the weavers of a local village... travel in exclusive open-top safari vehicles, and stay in luxurious tented camps and safari lodges... Special experiences include; game drives in the national parks of Tanzania and Kenya and a guided gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park for a one-hour gorilla family visit and a private lecture on conservation programs underway in Rwanda.

Safari FAQS: Know before you go

A picnic in Ngorongoro Crater

Enjoy a memorable picnic lunch in Ngorongoro Crater's "lost world"

Believed by many to have been Africa's original "Garden of Eden," Ngorongoro Crater ranks among the world's largest calderas, and contains one of the oldest and most diverse ecosystems on Earth. Within this dormant volcano's walls lie short grasslands, swamps, forests and a freshwater lake – all of which inspire a continuous parade of migrating wildlife. You'll not only embark on a game drive in this "lost world," but a private picnic lunch inside the crater will be a highlight of your trip.

A champagne breakfast on safari

Cap a balloon ride with a champagne breakfast in the bush

As if a hot air balloon ride over the awakening wildlife roaming Kenya's Masai Mara Reserve at dawn isn't exciting enough... imagine descending from your lofty perch above the plains to enjoy a very special champagne breakfast in the African bush...

Private game drives throughout your trip

Set off on private game drives on specially built safari vehicles

Hop aboard your specially built safari vehicle and make tracks on a daily game drive (or two) across the classic African savannah stretching out before you... in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park, and in Kenya's Samburu National Reserve and Masai Mara Reserve. Guiding you on your treks in search of the "Big Five" and other iconic wildlife are our expert drivers, trackers, rangers, and Tauck Directors... all highly experienced and eager to share their knowledge while keeping everyone engaged, safe and sound on the adventure of a lifetime!

Traveling with children as a guardian:

If you are traveling as the guardian of children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents authorizing emergency treatment in case of an illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling without BOTH parents. Tauck is not responsible for travel disruptions caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Are there any recommended vaccinations?

Some countries visited on this journey may require proof of certain vaccinations for entry. For the most up-to-date health and vaccination information, we recommend you consult with a travel medical specialist, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the embassies of the countries you'll visit.

Regarding the Yellow Fever vaccination:

You will need to show proof of Yellow Fever vaccination to enter Kenya. If you're unable to receive the vaccine, you will need to show a medical exemption note from your doctor to immigration officials upon entering the country. As requirements can change without notice, it's important to check for the latest updates before you travel.

How physically demanding is this journey?

Tauck journeys are designed for guests in good health. Depending on your destination, you may walk longer distances, climb stairs, and navigate uneven terrain. To help you choose the experience that suits you best, we've created a rating system for the activity level and pace of each itinerary. You can find the ratings for this journey in the overview section above. For more details about what to expect on tour, visit our Activity & Pace page.

Guests should feel comfortable getting into and out of safari vehicles each day. Safari vehicles are not air conditioned, and the areas covered on game drives are usually unpaved, bumpy, and dusty.

Those who choose to take part in the scheduled hot air balloon ride should be at ease with higher elevations and climbing into and out of the basket. Guests who weigh more than 265 pounds (120 kilograms) may be charged an additional fee by the balloon operator.

The mountain gorilla trek is at altitude. The elevation at the trailhead is approximately 7,000 feet above sea level, and from there, altitude increases as you climb upward into the gorillas' habitat.

The length of the gorilla trek will vary group-to-group, depending on the location of the gorilla family you're visiting, and where/if they move. The Trek can range from 40 minutes to six hours of hiking. Do remember that, depending on how far you hike to see the family, you will be hiking the same distance back. You must stay with your hiking group at all times and the time allotted depends on the abilities of all guests.

Can Tauck accommodate mobility limitations?

The responsibility of your Tauck Director is to ensure the larger group enjoys a relaxing and seamless journey; therefore, he or she cannot provide ongoing assistance to any one guest.

Accessibility Accommodations: Guests who require accessibility accommodations must notify Tauck at the time of booking, or as soon as the need for accommodation arises. Guests are also responsible for promptly notifying Tauck if there is a material change in their mobility, accessibility, cognitive, or other participation-related needs after booking and prior to departure that may affect their ability to participate in the Trip or require accommodations, special arrangements, or reassessment of participation. Tauck will make reasonable efforts, in coordination with our suppliers, to attempt to accommodate such requests. Unfortunately, not all requests can be fulfilled. We are not responsible for denial of service by carriers, hotels, or other independent suppliers.
