Meet Croatia's former Minister of Tourism

Day 7

A discussion with Croatia's former Minister of Tourism in Zagreb

After receiving a master's Degree in tourism economics at the Faculty of Economics and Business in Zagreb, Dubrovnik native Pave Zupan Ruskovic spent decades as an innovative and award-winning executive in the international tourism industry before being named Croatia's Minister of Tourism in 2000. During her tenure, she oversaw one of the most important periods in the development of Croatian tourism after the conflicts of the 1990s, and spearheaded Croatia's participation in the United Nations World Tourism Organization. In Zagreb, you'll meet Ms. Zupan Ruskovic for an insightful conversation about life and tourism in Croatia today.

Slovenia's Postojna Caves

Day 10

Explore Slovenia's Postojna Caves on an exclusive early train tour

Today one of Slovenia's most-visited attractions, the Postojna Caves near Ljubljana became a tourist destination after the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Ferdinand visited them in 1819. An extensive series of subterranean limestone karst caves carved by the Pivka River over some two million years, the Postojna system comprises four interconnected caves with features including Big Mountain Hall, Spaghetti Hall, Concert Hall, an iconic formation known as "Brilliant," and the only underground post office on Earth. On an early-morning visit, you'll explore the caves both on foot and aboard the 21st-century version of an electric train that began service a century ago.

Tauck Exclusive – Lunch and more at Trakošćan Castle

Day 8

Go back in time with an exclusive royal welcome, tour and lunch at Croatia's Trakošćan Castle

Owned off and on since the 16th century by the noble Drašković family and now a Croatian national historic site, the fortress known as Trakošćan Castle dates back to the 13th century, but the current neo-Gothic structure you'll visit today was reconstructed in the mid-1800s. On your exclusive early-opening visit for Tauck guests only, you'll be welcomed to the castle by Renaissance-costumed knights and ladies-in-waiting, and treated to a guided tour followed by lunch inside the castle's opulent Knights' Hall.

Olive oil, truffles and more

Days 4, 10 and 11

Taste traditionally made olive oils, truffles and more

Taste your way through Croatia and Slovenia with culinary experiences including a farm-fresh snack of cheese, veggies, bread and wine with an olive-oil demo and tasting at a family-owned farm in the village of Orašac; tastings of local cookies, teran liqueur and honey at Ljubljana Castle; a visit and tasting at a gingerbread making workshop; a Tauck Exclusive hunting and tasting experience at a family-owned truffle farm; a tasting at a family-run olive oil farm in Vodnjan; and a six-course beer-pairing dinner and tour with a beer sommelier at the San Servolo brewery.

Unlike the many Tauck trips I have taken, there was little flexibility in the schedule to explore on our own. The group activities were uninspired—2 olive oil farms (1 was enough), a truffle hunt yielding no truffles, wasted time spent crossing borders to see very little, and hours spent getting to places with little to see/do (Krka, Brac, Istria)

Most Memorable Moment:

Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik, surprise in the caves, Zagreb, Ljubljana, Mostar, our guide. While I continue to recommend Tauck to many people, I wouldn't recommend this tour. Please restructure this tour to allow more free time for guests to discover more on their own. Most guests don't need every minute planned--we like to explore on our own, too.

What a delight! Busy,a lot of walking, heat unbearable, TD's and locals were knowledgable, food, lodging, and transportation excellent. Too hot in month of June. Recommend sending Project manager to review complete package because some of the places were worthy of longer stays, others why bother. Timing of events a problem w/slow walkers.

Most Memorable Moment:

The caves and the water falls, followed by initial castle in Dubrov. Credit to the TD's. Too tight on timing causes tension, then to wrong words. Will be doing NE USA this fall, that will be #8.
