Every ten years, the quiet Bavarian village of Oberammergau becomes the stage for one of the world's most remarkable theatrical traditions.
The Oberammergau Passion Play traces its origins to 1633 when villagers, devastated by the Thirty Years' War and the plague, vowed that if they were spared further suffering they would perform a play depicting the final days of Jesus Christ. According to local tradition, the community kept its promise – and has continued the tradition ever since.
More than four centuries later, over a thousand village residents take part in the production, serving as actors, musicians, stagehands, and volunteers. The result is a deeply moving performance that brings generations of families together in a dramatic retelling of the Passion of Christ.
Today, the Passion Play draws visitors from around the world and continues to hold a singular place in Europe's cultural and spiritual heritage.
