We went over the Christmas holidays and it's probably the best. Temps in the 80s or 90s (Cambodia) and no rain other than in Vietnem,where it's liable to rain anytime. Going in either rainy season or summer (temps can reach mid 120s) is probably not a good idea.
For the best balance, we’d vote for the months of April, May or October. For those sticking to the south, November to February is dry and a touch cooler. From July to November, violent and unpredictable typhoons hit central and northern Vietnam, which can dampen the spirits of even the most enthusiastic traveler.
I was there late November into mid-December, travelled from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in the south, up through Cambodia on a Mekong River Cruise and ended up in Hanoi in the north. Weather was beautiful entire trip - 80s and 90s depending on location, no rain at all.
