Sept. 27th trip-Misc.

We are going on the Sept. 27th trip. What do you wear in the evening? What are the chances of monsoons
at that time? What about mosquitoes? I have noticed that men should wear knee length shorts but in another
area of the instructions it says pants-what is correct for the temples. Will our tour director be a wardrobe
consultant!!!!!!

  • Hello bernray,

    Weather /Monsoons
The weather in the months of September and October ranges from the mid to high 60s F to the high 80s F throughout the itinerary, except in Cochin and Mumbai where it is in the high 70s F to low 80s F. Rain is more likely to occur from July to early September. As your departure date approaches, you can always check websites such as www.weather.com for the most up to date weather report for the region.

    Mosquitoes
Always keep a tube of mosquito repellent with you. Pay special attention to mosquito protection between dusk and dawn. This is when the type of mosquito whose bite
transmits malaria is active. Use insect repellents that contain DEET (diethylmethyltoluamide). Read and follow the directions and precautions on the product label.

If you are going to visit areas where there is risk for malaria, take your malaria prevention medication before, during, and after travel, as directed. (See your doctor for a prescription.) Malaria exists throughout the year in all areas including the cities of Delhi and Mumbai.

It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources. Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.

    Attire

In India, plain cottons or cotton/synthetic blends are the most practical and the coolest in summer. It is best to avoid synthetic fabrics that do not “breathe.” For protection from the harsh sun, a hat with a wide brim is recommended. Shorts, minis and tank tops are inadvisable unless you are on a beach. In small towns and
cities especially, people may tend to stare if you expose too much skin. Recommended clothing includes trousers, capris, skirts, tops and shirts.

Most Indians dress in modest clothing. To respect Indian sensitivities, when in public it is recommended that women should wear skirts below the knees or longer, or relatively loose slacks, avoiding sleeveless blouses, tight pants, and shorts. Men should avoid going shirtless; trousers are preferable to shorts. These suggestions are especially important when visiting rural areas or tradition-bound urban areas.

For formal occasions, such as the welcome and farewell dinners, we recommend “smart casual,” to suit a tropical climate. To enter a holy shrine, women should wear a long skirt, dress, or trousers.

    Hope this helps,
    Emily
  • For the men - really no need to bring a sportscoat. All the more formal occassions are private to the tour group. Nice shirt and slacks is sufficient. I wore my sportscoat once on the trip for the reception night and really was not needed - save the luggage space - you'll need that extra space!!
