immunizations

My brother and I are going on Classic Safari October 13th. We got our Hep A/B, dtp, polio, typhoid and we will take anti-malaria pills. Our travel clinic told us yellow fever was not recommended, but after reading up on yellow fever, it seems to be a grey area. Should we get it? Better safe than sorry?? Anyone have any opinions on this?

I believe it is necessary to have yellow fever immunization to enter Tanzania from an area with yellow fever, and Kenya has had outbreaks.

Do we enter Tanzania again after leaving?? We are flying home from Nairobi. Where can I find the information regarding the yellow fever outbreaks in the area of Kenya we are going to? Thanks.

Yes, there has been confusion regarding yellow fever shot, so I called Tauck then called their specialist phone number and they to were not sure, so the person I spoke with asked one of the Tour directors that do this safari, and they said they did not receive word that yellowfever was necessary. My husband and I are going on the Oct. 13th tour and did not receive the yellow fever shot. Hopefully we'll be OK. So looking forward to this trip.

We were on the 9/8 trip (it was fabulous!!!) and there was no requirement for the yellow fever vaccine. I got the shot, my spouse did not. I faithfully carried my yellow immunization booklet and no where was there any requirement to show it. We only saw 3 mosquitos on our entire trip, however we faithfully took our anti-malaria medicine. I think mosquitos are not a very big problem during the dry season which they are currently in. I brought bug spray and never used it. You will love this trip. It is the trip of a lifetime!

If one looks at the itiniary you can see that the trip visits Tanzania FIRST and THEN Kenya rather than the other way around...so is the yellow fever immunization really needed? I've read or heard that that particular shot may be one someone who is "older" might not want to take. I need to do research on that. Also, last year I was able to get shots at the public health department for a very reasonable price.

I went on the Sept. 12 safari. The CDC website said yellow fever was required to enter Tanzania so I got it but was never asked for proof and no one else on the trip was asked both in entering Tanzania and Kenya. The altitude was high enough that mosquitoes were not seen but we all took our anti-malarial pills. Bug spray was also not needed but had along.
