Cruise the "Land of the Midnight Sun" and discover a natural wonderland unlike any other on our 10-day Spitsbergen cruise in the Arctic Ocean.

Cultural journeys and expeditions

Discover the wildlife capital of the Arctic.... islands of glaciers, fjords, and ice sculptures revered for their silent majesty.... voyage in the land of the Midnight Sun, with BBC filmmakers in tow, as you discover a region unlike any other and where daylight never ends.

This 10-day trip – including a 7-night expedition cruise north of Norway in the wildlife capital of the Arctic – explores a remote archipelago of glaciers, fjords, and ice floes, revered for its silent majesty by nature lovers in the know. From Oslo, fly to Spitsbergen's main settlement, Longyearbyen, and embark on a 7-night Arctic Ocean cruise aboard Le Boréal. Go where the weather and movement of wildlife tell you to go, seeking out tiny Svalbard reindeer, polar bears, walrus colonies, whales, Arctic foxes, puffins, and more. A wildlife filmmaker from BBC Earth and expedition naturalists accompany you onboard ship and ashore throughout your voyage in the land of the Midnight Sun, where daylight never ends. Come ashore by Zodiac with your naturalist guides and expedition leaders for rocky treks through this altogether otherworldly landscape of jagged mountains, steep-sided valleys, sheer cliffs, and crackling, calving glaciers. You’ll be far above the Arctic Circle – the closest you can get to the North Pole! Onboard ship at night, enjoy talks, informal conversations with your expedition guides, exclusive BBC Earth films, and the camaraderie that only Arctic explorers can share. Book early – one trip only in 2020!

Explore the Polar Regions with Tauck

Experiencing the Midnight Sun

Cruising the Land of the Midnight Sun

A natural phenomenon occurring during the summer months in locations north of the Arctic Circle or south of the Antarctic Circle, the Midnight Sun refers to times when the sun remains visible at the local midnight, as much as 55 miles (90 km) outside the polar circle. Since there are no permanent human settlements south of the Antarctic Circle (except for research stations), regions experiencing the midnight sun are limited to those crossed by the Arctic Circle – parts of Canada, Iceland, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark (Greenland), Russia and the United States (Alaska). In Svalbard, Norway, the northernmost inhabited region of Europe, there is no sunset from approximately April 19 to August 23.

Encountering Monaco Glacier

Monaco Glacier – a photographer's dream in Spitsbergen

As you cruise through the Svalbard archipelago to the spectacular fjords of Northern Spitsbergen, you’ll encounter a truly remarkable sight – the huge, blue-tinted Monaco Glacier (a.k.a. Monacobreen), adjacent to the Liefdefjorden in Spitsbergen, Norway. The glacier’s enormous size and vivid blue tint has made it one of the most-often photographed glaciers in the Arctic region. It was named in honor of the oceanographer and explorer Prince Albert I of Monaco, great-great-grandfather of Prince Albert II, Monaco’s currently reigning monarch.

The amazing wildlife of the Arctic

Discover the wildlife capital of the Arctic...

On your unforgettable cruise along the coast of Spitsbergen in the Arctic Ocean and the Greenland Sea, you'll encounter islands of glaciers, fjords, and natural "ice sculpture," revered for their silent majesty. Your daily itinerary is flexible – go where the weather and movement of wildlife tell you to go, seeking tiny Svalbard reindeer, polar bears, walruses, whales, Arctic foxes, red-throated divers, pink-footed geese, and more. A wildlife filmmaker and expedition naturalists accompany you throughout your voyage in the "land of the Midnight Sun," where daylight never ends. Enjoy a camaraderie that only Arctic explorers can share... you’ll be the closest you can get to the North Pole!
