Currency and Exit from Bolivia

We are planning our trip in June. Can US currency be used in Peru and Bolivia or should it be converted to local currency? How much local currency is recommenced?

Our departure from La Paz, Bolivia is on an airline scheduled to leave at 6:50 AM in the morning. This will require arriving at the airport at 4 AM. Will a Tauck representative meet us and transport us to the airport at that time?

  • Hello rcparrill,

The currency in Peru is the Nuevos Soles. The currency in Bolivia is the Boliviano.

For convenience and competitive exchange rates, we suggest using major credit cards for purchases, or using a debit card to obtain cash for purchases at the many conveniently located ATMs. Although it is not necessary for you to exchange money prior to your arrival in country, it may be useful to have a small amount of local currency with you when you arrive. If upon arrival you require local currency, you can visit one of the many currency exchange facilities at the airport, use an ATM, or exchange currency at your hotel. If you are exchanging U.S. Dollars for Bolivianos, you need to bring crisp, clean bills with no tears.

We recommend that you contact your bank in advance of your departure to ensure that you will be able to use your ATM and credit cards while traveling. When contacting your bank, be sure to notify them of your travel dates and destination. This will allow the bank to anticipate charges being made outside of your local area, and help prevent the bank from incorrectly suspending your cards for charges that might otherwise appear suspicious. We also recommend that you make a photocopy of the front and back sides of your ATM and credit cards to leave with someone at home who can assist you in the event your cards are lost or stolen.

ATM machines are readily available in Lima, Cuzco and La Paz.

Regarding your airport transfers, transfers during arrivals and departures are included. Please make sure that we have all your flight information before your trip.

    Hope this helps,
    Emily
