2009 Itinerary


Day 1 – Sunny El Paso, Texas
El Paso is your gateway to this enchanting New Mexico travel adventure. Tour begins: 3:45 p.m. at El Paso Marriott. A transfer is included from El Paso International Airport to the El Paso Marriott. Attend a fascinating presentation on the bats of Carlsbad Caverns, given by a RAVEN-series conservationist who has dedicated his life to the preservation of nature's endangered species. Your week of New Mexico travel kicks off with a private evening at the El Paso Museum of Art, a fine arts museum housing more than 5,000 works of art from around the world; enjoy a welcome cocktail party and dinner, as well as a private showing.

Day 2 – The amazing caves of Carlsbad Caverns
Your New Mexico travel adventure begins with a visit to the limestone caves of Carlsbad Caverns National Park, hundreds of which lie deep beneath the desert. As you explore this amazing subterranean world, you’ll discover why humorist Will Rogers called Carlsbad Caverns “the Grand Canyon with a roof on it.” After hearing legends and lore of the high desert during lunch on a cruise* along the Pecos River, head out across the Chihuahuan Desert to your mountain casino resort.

Day 3 – White Sands and a touch of resort pleasure
Discover the famous sea of snow-white gypsum sand dunes at White Sands National Monument before spending the rest of the day at leisure enjoying all the many amenities and activities offered at your beautiful lakeside resort in the mountains of Mescalero. Play a game of golf, go horseback riding, shoot some skeet or make a "donation" at the casino, and enjoy fine à la carte dining in the resort's signature restaurant at dinner tonight.

Day 4 – Amazing Albuquerque, a New Mexico travel highlight
Lying at the foot of spectacular Sandia Peak, Albuquerque is a highlight of any New Mexico travel experience. Explore the city's historic, 300-year-old Old Town, with its cobbled alleys, courtyards, cafés, and Spanish colonial architecture. Spend the remainder of the day as you please at your resort, whose design reflects the art of the Tamayame people.

Day 5 – The many cultures of Santa Fe
As the crossroads of the historic Southwest, Santa Fe’s unique culture and ambiance are a blend of Spanish, Native American and Old West influences. A walking tour of Santa Fe's historic center discovers this diverse cultural mix – and explores the secrets of southwestern cuisine at a lunch highlighting the city's diverse heritage. After arriving at your hotel just steps from the city's historic plaza, enjoy a cocktail reception followed by dinner at your leisure in the hotel's Old House restaurant, honored as the best in New Mexico.

Day 6 – Ancient ruins and artistic creativity in Taos
With the scenic beauty of its contrasting forests and deserts, Taos has attracted a thriving and talented community of artists and craftspersons. After a stop at Rancho de Taos to see the iconic and much-photographed 18th-century San Francisco de Asís Mission Church, visit legendary Taos Pueblo. As you view this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll discover a culture that has inhabited these adobe structures for more than a thousand years. Spend this evening at your leisure in Santa Fe.

Day 7 – Georgia O’Keeffe’s Southwest
A private morning visit to the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum reveals the sensuous landscapes and other works by this renowned 20th-century artist, who so loved this part of the Southwest that she made it her home later in life. (Note: during periods when the museum is closed, you'll visit the Georgia O'Keeffe Research Center, where a collection of the artist's personal effects is on display.) Then explore Bandelier National Monument, with its ruins of ancient cliff houses and pueblos – a special highlight of Tauck's New Mexico travel experience. Please join us for a farewell dinner this evening.

Day 8 – Journey home
Your New Mexico travel ends in Albuquerque. Fly home anytime; a transfer is included from the Eldorado Hotel & Spa to Albuquerque International Sunport. Allow a minimum of 2 hours for your flight check-in.

Note: May 10 and September 13 departures will visit the Georgia O'Keeffe Research Center instead of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.
