Ken Burns Event – New for 2018! Co-crafted with filmmaker Ken Burns, our newest Tauck Event is set in the United States capital and explores themes of American democracy from films by Ken Burns such as The Civil War, The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, The Congress, Thomas Jefferson, The War, Not for Ourselves Alone – and airing in September, 2017, The Vietnam War – directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, produced by Sarah Botstein, Lynn Novick and Ken Burns. For five days and four nights, The Tauck Washington, DC Event examines the enduring strengths and values that make our country so special, from American democracy to the promises of freedoms in the US Constitution and Bill of Rights, the sacrifices and resilience of the American people, and all that unites the United States and embodies its motto, E Pluribus Unum – “out of many, one.” Our event spends four nights at The Willard InterContinental, an integral part of Washington life and lore for over a century and a half; the Pennsylvania Avenue landmark has hosted every US president since 1850 – Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote his “I Have a Dream” speech here – and the term “lobbyist” originally referred to the Willard lobby during the Ulysses S. Grant administration. Themed sightseeing tracks include We, the People, exploring the relationship and delicate balance between the three branches of the United States government defined in the first three articles of the Constitution through talks by noted speakers, plus guided visits to the US Capitol and the Supreme Court, and insider access to the Library of Congress; Shared Sacrifice, focusing on the tests America has faced throughout its history and the sacrifices made defending our freedoms, with visits to the WWII, Korean War and Vietnam memorials, Arlington National Cemetery, and more; and A More Perfect Union, examining how the Constitution and country have evolved to protect all Americans, with visits to the African American Civil War Museum and Belmont-Paul NHS. Private evenings and dinners include an exclusive opportunity to meet Ken Burns following his keynote address and a retrospective of his works during a private Tauck evening at the National Archives, featuring a new exhibit showcasing America’s founding documents our private welcome event at the remarkable Newseum, featuring an exclusive talk by Jeffrey Rosen, President and CEO of the National Constitution Center; an exclusive farewell event at the National Building Museum including a patriotic concert and a black-tie “Inaugural Ball” – complete with an orchestra for dancing; and a gala dinner reflecting the menu served at Lincoln’s second inaugural ball. Presentations by noted speakers include renowned Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer; a former Supreme Court clerk at the historic Washington Press Club; and a noted curator of African-American history. You'll enjoy lunch at the Capitol’s Senate Cafeteria and historic Ben’s Chili Bowl on U St.; a private tour of the World War I Centennial exhibit at the Library of Congress; and an exclusive behind-the-scenes visit to the Florence Bayard Hilles Feminist Library.
