Our 5-day, 4-night Sicily Extension in delightful Taormina is new for 2009! Following select departures of Tauck’s Cruising Mediterranean Shores, treat yourself to this most enjoyable of Sicily tours. While the extension is not accompanied by a Tauck Director, a local host stands ready to assist with suggestions of places to see and things to do that might interest you, recommendations of restaurants, obtaining reservations and arranging excursions. Your five-star hotel, the San Domenico Palace, began its life as a monastery in the 15th century and much of the original structure is still in use. Its location makes it the perfect place from which to explore the charms of Taormina and discover more of Sicily beyond the cliff-top town.2009 ItineraryDay 1: Welcome to Sicily Our Sicily extension tours begin at 11:00 AM at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Airport. You’ll be met there by a local host as you prepare to board your included flight to Catania in Sicily. A transfer from the Catania airport to the San Domenico Palace in Taormina is included. Meet your local Sicilian host later at a cocktail reception, during which you’ll find out about all the adventures and opportunities that will be yours to enjoy during the next few days. Your host will be happy to help you select a restaurant for dinner tonight. Lodging: San Domenico Palace Hotel, Taormina, Sicily Day 2: The Godfather and the ancient Greeks The day begins when you join your local host for an excursion to the small, hillside villages of Savoca and Forza d’Agrò. These villages may give you a feeling of déja vu if you’re a fan of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather trilogy, because much of the footage for the films was shot on location here. For a complete change of pace, after lunch on your own back in Taormina, a walking tour of the town includes the spectacular theater built by the ancient Greeks and “remodeled” by the Romans. The view out over the Bay of Naxos to Mount Etna in the distance is one that you’ll never forget. Your host will gladly assist you with reservations for dinner this evening. Meals: Breakfast Lodging: San Domenico Palace Hotel, Taormina, Sicily Day 3: Intriguing Siracusa Cicero described the then-mighty city of Siracusa as “the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all,” and St. Paul’s visit there during its Roman era is mentioned in the Bible. There is much of great interest to explore here – such as the Ear of Dionysius, the Greek theater and the cathedral that was a Greek temple in ancient days – as you’ll discover during a full-day excursion. After returning to Taormina in the late afternoon, the remainder of the day and the evening are yours to spend as you choose. Meals: Breakfast, lunch Lodging: San Domenico Palace Hotel, Taormina, Sicily Day 4: Sicily as you please Today is yours to do just as you wish. Taormina offers many pleasant diversions; ask your local host about current exhibits or special events that may happening during your stay. Beyond the town, Sicily tours offer much to see and do. You might choose to wander beyond the town to visit Mount Etna, or enjoy a wine-tasting lunch or another activity that your host can arrange for you. No matter how you spend your day, what you decide to see and do will provide memories of your time in Sicily to last a lifetime. Meals: Breakfast Lodging: San Domenico Palace Hotel, Taormina, Sicily Day 5: Homeward bound As your Sicily Extension concludes, an included transfer will take you from the San Domenico Palace Hotel to the airport at Catania for your included return flight to Rome. Meals: Breakfast Sicily tours that spend multiple nights in Taormina are a pure delight. Follow your European vacation with 4 nights in this lovely cliff-top town on our new Sicily Extension in 2009. |
