2009 Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive Berlin
Tauck’s Berlin / Dresden Extension begins with an 11:00 AM departure from Berlin-Tegel Airport. Your Germany travel adventure starts with a fascinating stop at the Meissen Porcelain Factory. Developed in 1708, Meissen was the first hard-paste porcelain successfully produced in Europe and the Meissen logo, consisting of two crossed swords, is one of the oldest trademarks in existence. In the early days, workers were actually imprisoned in the factory to prevent them from giving away the “trade secrets” involved in the production of the delicate-yet-durable porcelain. Although you won't discover those secrets either, you'll enjoy learning a bit about the process as you tour the factory and have lunch. Continue on to Dresden and take an introductory walking tour to acquaint you with the city; you'll spend the next two nights at a charming boutique hotel. During a cocktail reception this evening, your host will share information about all the opportunities for discovery that await you.

Day 2 – Dresden past and present
Like the mythological phoenix, Dresden has risen in spectacular fashion from the ashes of its virtually total destruction at the end of World War II. The extensive reconstruction efforts that you’ll see during a comprehensive sightseeing tour this morning are an inspiration. The dedicated, cooperative efforts of former enemies have returned the world-famous landmark, the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), to its former glory, and you’ll find your visit there most memorable. The rest of the day is yours to spend as you wish discovering more of Dresden on your own. Your host can suggest interesting options and recommend restaurants for lunch and dinner.
Meals: Breakfast
Lodging: QF Dresden Hotel, Dresden, Germany

Day 3 – To Berlin via Potsdam
The residence of the Prussian kings until 1918, Potsdam is the place where the Third Reich began with a handshake, and where the aftermath of World War II in Europe was discussed by Harry Truman, Winston Churchill and Josef Stalin. During a stop there, take a stroll through the terraces of the magnificent Sanssouci Palace, once the home of Frederick the Great, and visit Cecilienhof Palace, site of the Potsdam Conference. Cross the famous Glienicke Bridge, where many Cold War spies were exchanged, and continue on to your hotel in the heart of Berlin. Your host will be happy to recommend restaurants for dinner and assist with reservations as well as suggest pleasant activities for the evening.
Meals: Breakfast
Lodging: Hilton Berlin, Germany

Day 4 – Berlin beckons... explore it your way
The historic city of Berlin is overflowing with fascinating places to explore. An orientation sightseeing tour this morning will introduce you to the city and help you zero in on what you’d most like to see and do. Then, the rest of the day is yours. Your host stands ready to assist you with information about special events that might be taking place, admissions to museums and attractions, or perhaps finding a great restaurant that only the knowledgeable local folk know about.
Meals: Breakfast
Lodging: Hilton Berlin, Germany

Day 5 – Homeward bound
Your Germany travel on our Berlin / Dresden Extension concludes in Berlin. A transfer is included from the Hilton Berlin to Berlin-Tegel Airport for your flight home. Please allow 2 1/2 hours for flight check-in formalities. We wish you a safe and pleasant journey.
