2008 Westbound Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Calgary
Tour departs 3:00 p.m. from Calgary airport. Cross the prairie into Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies and arrive at your grand hotel, built more than a century ago to resemble a Scottish baronial castle. Join your Tauck Director and travel companions at tonight's welcome reception and dinner.

Day 2: Bow River float trip and Banff at leisure
Prior to your tour of western Canada via rail, enjoy a float trip down the scenic Bow River today. In your free time at your resort, you can hike, swim, explore or enjoy a range of optional activities (available at addtional cost) – perhaps take a guided nature walk; book a treatment at the Willow Stream Spa, ranked among the top spas in Canada; ride the scenic Banff Gondola; go horseback riding, or check out the museums in the town of Banff on your own.

Day 3: Yoho National Park and Lake Louise
Travel through Kicking Horse Pass into Yoho National Park. See the Spiral Tunnels, a century-old railway engineering feat, and Natural Bridge, a rock formation over the Kicking Horse River. Drive along the Bow River Valley and Moraine Lake in the Valley of the Ten Peaks (seasonal) en route to your chateau-style hotel on the edge of Lake Louise overlooking Victoria Glacier.

Day 4: Icefields Parkway & glacier ride
Drive the Icefields Parkway featuring jaw-dropping views of mountains, waterfalls, glaciers, and snowfields around every turn. Watch for bears, elk, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats, especially in the spring and fall. View Athabasca Glacier flowing from the Columbia Icefield, and take a memorable ride across the glacier’s surface on an Ice Explorer, a specially designed vehicle. Arrive in Jasper National Park for a two-night stay before continuing through western Canada via rail.

Day 5: A day in Jasper
On an open day in Jasper National Park, optional activities at your resort (available at additional cost) include horseback riding, renting a canoe or paddleboat on Lake Beauvert, taking a guided nature walk, playing tennis or a round of golf on a top-rated course, or visiting the historic town of Jasper on your own.

Day 6: Through the Rockies in Canada via rail
Enjoy a free morning, then visit Maligne Canyon before setting off on a classic trip through western Canada via rail. In Jasper, board The Canadian, featuring vintage 1950s rail cars; admire the views as you cross some of the most beautiful alpine scenery in Canada via rail aboard a private domed observation car reserved exclusively for Tauck guests. Towering peaks and glaciers highlight the route. Cross the Continental Divide into the province of British Columbia.

Day 7: Explore Vancouver
Your journey through the Rockies of Canada via rail continues to Vancouver, where you'll tour landmark attractions such as Chinatown, Queen Elizabeth Park, historic Gastown, and Stanley Park. During an afternoon and evening spent as you wish, perhaps take in some of the city’s museums or galleries.

Day 8: Ferry and floatplane
Watch for orcas, seals, porpoises, sea lions, and bald eagles on a ferry cruise through the Gulf Islands to Victoria. Visit The Butchart Gardens, covering 55 acres with colorful floral displays. Established in 1904, it’s a National Historic Site of Canada. Then return to Vancouver on a floatplane with spectacular views over the Gulf Islands. Tonight, reflect on the highlights of your tour of western Canada via rail, land, air and sea at our farewell reception and dinner.

Day 9: Journey home
Tour ends: The Fairmont Waterfront, Vancouver. Checkout time is 12:00 noon. Since departure times vary, a transfer to Vancouver International Airport is not included.
