Heli-Hiking
What is the Heli Experience?
Explore the magnificent pristine wilderness just beyond the Canadian Rockies through Tauck’s Heli-Hiking adventures, accessible to guests of all ages!
Remote, stylish lodges have been built to serve as a helicopter base from which you can reach a world of lush meadows, dramatic peaks, cascading waterfalls, green valleys and tranquil mountain streams. From each lodge, you can explore about 1,000 square miles. A similar area in the Alps would see thousands of people at any given time; here, you and 43 others have this majestic splendor all to yourselves.
Compared to other mountains, the altitude is lower; lodges are about 4,000 to 5,000 ft., and the walks generally range from 6,000 to 9,000 ft. – comfortable for everyone! And the summer weather is generally pleasant, 50° – 85° F in the day, 30° – 60° F at night.
The Story of Heli-Hiking
In 1978, enthusiastic heli-skier Arthur Tauck met Austrian Alpinist Hans Gmoser. Together they conceived a way for summertime visitors, of many generations, to explore the vast untouched areas of the Canadian Rockies wilderness beyond the reach of the highway – as close as most people ever get to the magnificent mountains themselves.
Hans had built the remote Bugaboo, Cariboo and Bobbie Burns lodges, using 12-passenger helicopters to reach them. Arthur’s list of devoted Tauck travelers yearned to explore such a pristine territory. This winning combination suddenly afforded people access to thousands of square miles of the most beautiful, and hitherto untouched, alpine terrain imaginable.
Together, Hans and Arthur created and developed a series of vacations lauded by travelers as innovative, exciting and highly emotional.
