Stretch your muscles, stretch your mind! Being active in a new place is an energizing way to engage with the destination and connect with the people, culture, and land. That’s why we incorporate more active elements into our Culturious journeys. The level of activity on each trip depends on the day and the destination.
In Europe you might hop in a 4x4 vehicle for a ride through mountains of white marble in a quarry in Carrara… go bicycling on top of a city wall in Tuscany… hike along the cliff path between two Cinque Terre villages… stroll through an outdoor sculpture park at a winery in Provence… hike in the ochre quarries of Rousillon… or take a walk atop the ancient Pont du Gard.
In America’s national parks during the summer, hike along wilderness trails with naturalists who help spot the wildlife, go whitewater rafting, and saddle up for a horseback ride on a working cattle ranch. In winter, head out on a snowshoeing trek around Old Faithful, go ice-skating, and take a sleigh ride through the National Elk Refuge.
Make your trip more active. Culturious journeys are designed with free time built in so you can add more active adventures as you wish. Hike more, go swimming, hit the ski slopes, try your hand at dog-sledding... the possibilities are endless in the destinations we’ve selected.
Choose a journey with the right physical activity and pace levels for you. This is important so you get the most out of your travel experience and can fully participate. To understand the physical and pace levels of Tauck journeys, be sure to look at the activity and pace levels on individual trip pages online and in our brochures. The higher the number the more active and fast-paced the journey. See the activity and pace definitions below.
Activity and Pace Definitions:
- LEVEL 1: Walking / standing for up to one hour at a time, stairs and level ground
- LEVEL 2: Walking / standing for one to two miles at a time, uneven steps & cobblestones
- LEVEL 3: Active hiking, biking & walking for two to three miles, up hills & uneven terrain
- LEVEL 4: Active walking, hiking, biking & sea kayaking with distances of 3+ miles for up to three hours at a time
- LEVEL 1: Generally easy – with time to rest and relax
- LEVEL 2: Moderate – with some early morning starts
- LEVEL 3: Often robust – long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times
- LEVEL 4: Consistently robust, very full and active days, extended travel times, use of different modes of local transport
