The Panama Canal & Costa Rica - Eastbound Combine a Costa Rica tour with a Panama Canal cruise on Tauck's 11-day journey to The Panama Canal & Costa Rica and enjoy up-close discoveries of amazing wildlife, fascinating centuries-old cultures and man-made marvels. A 6-day voyage aboard the sporty yacht, Le Levant, includes a complete transit of the Panama Canal, as well as encounters with the Kuna and Choco peoples who live in this beautiful area. Your Costa Rica tour explores the rich interior, with its abundant wildlife. Walk on the lunar-like lava landscape at the summit of mighty Volcano Irazð, Costa Rica's largest volcano, visit a gold museum and learn how coffee beans are harvested and brewed to perfection. Tauck's Costa Rica tour is unlike any other! Day-by-Day Itinerary 2010 ItineraryEastbound Click here for Westbound itinerary.
Day 1 - Arrive San José for the start of your Costa Rica tour
Tauck's Costa Rica tour and cruise of the Panama Canal begins in San José. Welcome to Costa Rica! A transfer is included from Juan Santamaria International Airport to the Real InterContinental Hotel & Club Tower in the elite Escazð suburb. Dinner at the hotel is at your leisure this evening.
Meals: Dinner
Lodging: Real InterContinental Hotel & Club Tower, San José, Costa Rica
Day 2 - A walk on the moon and golden gems
Begin your Costa Rica tour with a visit to Volcano Irazð National Park, where you'll walk along the lava trails and through the surreal lunar landscape of the tallest volcano in Costa Rica - a highlight of this Costa Rica tour. Although there hasn't been a significant eruption since 1963, Irazð still grumbles a bit upon occasion. Peer down at the strangely colored lake at the bottom of the Diego de la Haya crater and, if the weather is clear, see both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Back in San Jose, visit the Gold Museum to see a wonderland of pre-Columbian gold artifacts, then be dazzled by the National Theatre, an architectural showpiece of gold and marble. Please join us for our welcome reception and dinner this evening.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Lodging: Real InterContinental Hotel & Club Tower, San José, Costa Rica
Day 3 - Coffee and local crafts on Tauck's Costa Rica tour
No Costa Rica tour would be complete without a visit to a coffee plantation to learn about the process of roasting coffee. Experience a taste of Costa Rican coffee fresh from the farm before exploring the village of Sarchi, known for its colorfully painted oxcarts. Board your private yacht this afternoon in Puerto Caldera for the start of your 6-night cruise aboard Le Levant.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Lodging: Aboard Le Levant
Day 4 - Spend the day at a jungle resort
Cast anchor at the Osa Peninsula today where a small boat will tender you ashore at a jungle resort in a private reserve. There are over 170 acres of lush jungle here, bordering Corcovado National Park. Go exploring with a naturalist guide who takes you hiking in the lush landscapes and points out the diverse ecosystems and bird life that thrive here. You may spot brightly colored parrots and an occasional toucan. Take a refreshing swim off an idyllic beach or return to the ship for an on-board lecture.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Lodging: Aboard Le Levant
Day 5 - Your Costa Rica tour continues in Coiba National Park
Le Levant anchors off Panama's
idyllic Coiba Island National Park to offer you the delights of a day
spent in the sun and the sea. Swim in the warm, clear water, observe
the underwater world while snorkeling or just relax on the secluded
white sand beach. A barbecue lunch on the beach will be a special treat
on this Costa Rica tour.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Lodging: Aboard Le Levant
Day 6 - A day in The Darien
A visit to an indigenous Indian community in this remote area of
Panama's Darien Province reveals a lifestyle that includes many
traditions of the Choco people dating back to the early 16th century.
Travel by cayucos, motorized canoes, on the Mogue River to meet the
local people, observe their daily lives, view their traditional dances
and admire their artful carvings in Cocobolo wood and Tagua “vegetable
ivory.” This opportunity to learn about their routines of everyday life
is an experience you can't get if traveling on your own, and will be
one of the most memorable days of your Panama / Costa Rica tour and
cruise.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Lodging: Aboard Le Levant
Day 7 - The "big dig"
Our voyage from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea through the
Panama Canal will be a fascinating and memorable experience as the
great locks open and close, ultimately raising and lowering Le Levant
85 feet. Ships were once towed through the locks by four-legged mules,
and the tractors that do the job today are still called mules in their
honor. Throughout your cruise, be sure and spend time on the Sun Deck,
the top deck, for a close-up 360- degree view! We pass through Gatun
Lake, one of the largest man-made lakes in the world, during our 8-
to-10 hour transit, where the islands were actually once the tops of
jungle hills. The bustling Panama Canal is truly a modern engineering
marvel, and the centerpiece of your Panama / Costa Rica tour and
cruise.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Lodging: Aboard Le Levant
Day 8 - San Blas sights
The beautiful San Blas Islands are home to the shy Kuna people. Go ashore this morning to meet them and admire their
famous, exquisitely embroidered molas. Usually made to be part of a
woman's blouse, a framed mola is a work of art. See how this intricate
needlework is done during a visit to a local village. Spend the afternoon swimming or snorkeling off a sun-kissed beach.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Lodging: Aboard Le Levant
Day 9 - Disembark ship and visit a rainforest
Bid farewell to Le Levant
today and travel to Panama's Gamboa Rainforest Resort where you can
choose an aerial tram ride* with a naturalist (the only gondola in
Panama), or a boat cruise with a naturalist. Get a shore-side look at
the workings of the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal, through which
you passed aboard Le Levant. Continue on to Panama City for a two-night stay in a landmark hotel.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch
Lodging: InterContinental Miramar Panama, Panama City, Panama
Day 10 - Panama City, past and present
Discover remnants of Panama's past on a city sightseeing tour of Panama Viejo. Ruins like the convent of St. Francis, the King's bridge and St. John's hospital speak volumes about the history of one of the oldest cities on the mainland of the Americas. Join us tonight for a farewell dinner as we say adios to your Costa Rica tour and Panama Canal cruise.
