Ice Worlds

Shallow Seas

Shallow seas fringe our planet’s continents. They lie on the continental shelves, which may stretch for hundreds of miles before the sea floor drops into deeper, darker waters. Shallow seas make up only 8% of the world’s oceans but they contain the vast majority of its marine life. The Galápagos Islands also lie at the crossroads of four major ocean currents... so nutrient rich cool waters from the south mingle with warm currents from the north and a deep cold current from the west, creating the foundation for a diversity of life found nowhere else on earth. And off the shores of Costa Rica, inhabitants of the ocean deep go to extraordinary lengths for survival.
